Often some friends ask me ‘What is Twitter?’ I always try to explain what it is, but after a minute, my friend’s face makes me feel that I am not making sens.
I conclude the conversation by telling them that Twitter is a little like the Facebook’s status. You can update your Twitter account when you want to share something with your friends. The difference is that on Twitter you call your friends: followers.
Then some of my friend asks ‘What is Facebook?’. At that moment I want to stop to being friends with them or wonder if they really are friends with me. What’s the point? .....

On twitter.com they give a very simple definition: Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Do you remember the time you were sending postcard to your friends and family? Well, Twitter is like sending a post card. Your “followers” receive it and you can send as many you want. The difference is that you send the same postcard to people that accept to receive it by following you (even if you don’t personally know them).

Even if Facebook have changed in the past months to go the same direction than Twitter, it still different. (Last year Facebook tried to buy Twitter without success). The Facebook status updates can only be read by “friends” and cannot be public. I have noticed that Twitter users (like me) does not use the Facebook status as much as they update their Twitter’s account. I have seen friends updating their Facebook status as frequently as their mood changes. Some other (like me) only update when they want to share something with they friends.
The Twitter Tweets seems less personal. A Twitter user tends to speak more about information or situations. The Twitter user posts information that can be useful to others. It is why “strangers” want and can follow you on Twitter.
Thoughts:
I think every Facebook status can be a “tweet” but every tweet may not be a Facebook status. Facebook and Twitter are definitely converging. The Age of the user seems to be the key of the differences. Teenagers tend to users more Facebook that Twitter. They switch to Twitter after college to share their experience more than what they do.
